Joan Benoit Samuelson is coming to Capital City!

We are excited to announce that Joan Benoit Samuelson will be in town for CCM Race Weekend May 18-19 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the first Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials, held in Olympia on May 12, 1984.

Here’s what she has to say about her upcoming visit:

“It is an honor for me to be returning to Olympia 35 years after the first Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials. I look forward to the homecoming in a community that embraced and hosted all of us for this historic event. The outpouring of support and enthusiasm from the community remains palpable to this day. It is hard to believe that 35 years have passed since that time as I still have many fond and vivid memories of my time in Olympia. I look forward to sharing and celebrating this anniversary with many of the participants, volunteers, and citizens who made the event possible.”

YOU CAN MEET HER AT OUR PRE-RACE DINNER on May 18! SEATING IS LIMITED. Tickets are available on our registration web site.

Details of her visit are still being fine-tuned, but here’s what we can share as of today:

*CCM Run Fair: Beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, Benoit will be at the Run Fair in Sylvester Park, which is the site of packet pickup for all Sunday races.

*CCM Pre-Race Dinner: 5:30 p.m., Saturday, May 18, Rotunda of the Legislative Building.

*She will hand out awards and be available for photos on Sunday at 10:30

In addition, Benoit plans to run one of the CCM races — likely the half marathon or 5-mile — on Sunday, May 19.

  1. Thanks for this info. I was the Thurston County Chamber Executive when we first began Olympia secures the Women’s Olympic Long Distance Trials. Due to cancer was unable to continue but our community teams did a great job of making them a great success. I look for reward to participating.

  2. Thank you Judi!
Perhaps we met in 1984, but I certainly look forward to meeting you next month on this historic occasion. Jacqueline
